This gorgeous Jacobean style oak Welsh dresser was handmade in England around 1900. The solid oak looks quite rich, with a pronounced quartersawn grain and a lustrous complexion. In beautiful contrast to the patinated oak are solid brass teardrop pulls, which turn to securely shut the cabinet doors on the top and bottom. The turned legs are as sturdy as they are elegant, and the maze-like carving on the cabinet door panels is characteristic of Jacobean style furniture. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, which is one of several indicators of the age of the piece, while we also know that the combination of the hutch and base is a marriage--you can tell most easily by looking at the differences between the hinges, as well as by noting the filled-in peg holes in the counter where the original hutch sat. It appears that the hutch was added to the base (and not the reverse). Also, the pulls were replaced years ago. Finally, although there is a fair amount of surface wear, this Welsh dresser remains quite sturdy, and thus in very good overall condition.
