An unusual piece, this antique oak bookcase has a large, hand carved decoration on the center of the door consisting of various musical instruments and floral decor. The maker even incorporated the handle to open the door into the top of the carving. It is an amazing work of art, a truly unique piece. The door is flanked by tall barley twist columns that add elegance to an already beautiful piece. This bookcase was made in Holland sometime around 1900. Inside the locking door there are four shelves that adjust via an alligator bracket system. The finish on the oak wood has faded in many places, giving the piece a very worn and rustic look. There is wear present throughout that is consistent with age in the form of tiny dings and wear marks. There are age splits to the right side and several to the top of the bookcase. An age split is a naturally occurring phenomenon that happens in most solid wood pieces and is purely cosmetic, not affecting the structural integrity of the piece at all. There is some wood missing from the square blocks at the top of both barley twist columns, but it is not very noticeable. The top also has developed some stains, although you would not really see them unless you were standing up on a stool or ladder. Overall this is a beautiful piece with some unique hand carvings that will last for generations to come.
