This antique grandfather clock was handmade in England by Thomas Field around 1815, during the Georgian period. The quartersawn oak shows a lustrous complexion and a striking grain, both of which look especially lovely in contrast with the flame mahogany banding. Reeded columns frame both the head and the middle of this clock, with accentual brass hardware at the tops and bottoms, as well as on the broken arch at the very top.
The ogee feet upon which this clock rests look especially elegant, and are also quite sturdy and stable. The solid wood has sustained some age splits, which are natural separations in the boards, and there are some stress marks here and there that are entirely consistent with age. There is also some crackling in the clock face but this, too, is superficial. On the interior of the door, there appear to be four written names: Richard, Henry Houghston and Frank Yoxall, followed by J. Reoditch, although this last is difficult to make out.
On the functional side, this clock operates on an eight-day movement and still keeps accurate time. The original lead weights remain with the clock, as does the pendulum, although the latter of these recently underwent repairs. Overall, therefore, the condition of this clock is excellent for its age.
