Recently restored in England by a third-generation cabinetmaker, this remarkable antique chest of drawers shows all the characteristics of fine furniture. The maple, for instance, shows an incredibly rich complexion with a distinct, "birds eye" grain. Solid brass swan neck pulls and winged escutcheons contrast beautifully with the wood, while the elegant columns are characteristic of what is commonly known as a Scottish chest design. This design also includes the breakfront shape and the curved drawer in the top of the chest. Each drawer of course features hand-cut dovetails, and the plinth base remains as sturdy as ever. The structure itself is composed of maple veneered over solid oak. Indeed, this antique chest is quite strong, although it has sustained some very minor stress marks in the columns and the locks no longer function. Overall, therefore, this Georgian period chest remains in excellent condition, particularly for a piece that is two hundred years old!
