This exquisite antique mahogany bureau was hand-crafted in Georgian-period England around 1820. The mahogany continues to display a deep, lustrous complexion and a highly pronounced grain that have grown more beautiful over the years with the development of a lovely patina. The brass hardware also contrasts beautifully with the mahogany. The fall opens to reveal a desk space with a tremendous amount of character, with a variety of stress marks and old ink stains. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, and the entire bureau rests on sturdy shaped bracket feet. Although the drawers all feature locks, they no longer function; likewise, although the fall lock functions, it does not engage because the socket that it once secured into is missing a piece of wood so that the fall will open even if the lock is engaged. The sides have developed some superficial separations in the wood that have resulted from the natural aging process. There are also a number of small stress and wear marks on this bureau, although it remains quite sturdy. Overall condition is therefore very good.
