Handmade in Victorian England around 1890, this exquisitely carved oak game table represents today perhaps the finest in antique furniture. The solid quartersawn oak, for instance, displays a remarkably lustrous complexion and a striking grain, due in part to the development of a rich patina, while the intricate carvings look quite elegant. Uniquely, the top of this table is constructed with a star pattern, which is not only a marker of high quality but also a highly prized and beautiful feature. In addition to its lovely appearance, this card table also contains three drawers, one of which contains a flip-up surface lined with felt, another of which contains what appears to be a chip compartment with two other divided sections, and the last of which is a standard drawer. Of course, each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, which is entirely in keeping with the impressive quality of this table. The turned baluster legs are incredibly sturdy, in part due to the firm x-framed stretcher that joins them, and although there are some stress marks here and there, the condition of this table remains excellent for its age. There are, however, a few natural separations in the top, which are purely cosmetic and do not affect the structural integrity of the wood.
