This gorgeous mahogany bookcase was hand-crafted in Edwardian England around 1910. Over the years, the mahogany has developed a lovely patina, so that now, it displays a remarkably rich complexion and a distinct grain. Complementing the mahogany is a lovely set of solid brass hardware as well as the lower carved door panels. The pulls have recently been replaced but all other hardware is original; also, the top lock functions, while the lower does not. The upper shelves are adjustable by means of an alligator bracket system, each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, and the bookcase rests on shaped bracket feet. This bookcase has also sustained some surface wear consistent with age, including wear marks and a separation between the boards that is developing in the top, which is often referred to as an age split, and which is a completely natural, cosmetic phenomenon that occurs in all solid wood furniture, and which does not affect structural integrity. Otherwise, this bookcase remains quite strong, and all in all is a very beautiful piece, so condition remains very good overall.
