A beautifully hand carved oak bench that dates back to around 1800. It probably started off earlier than this as a coffer or trunk and the back was added to make it into a bench. This was done in continental Europe and the piece remains a beautiful and functional antique bench that would serve any home for years to come. The oak has developed a wonderful patina over the years and definitely shows signs of use and distressing marks throughout. There is a repair to the right arm where it joins the back but both arms are very strong. The seat of this bench lifts up to reveal a large storage space. There is no key, but the lock does seem to have all the necessary parts to function. The backrest and bottom of this bench are covered in a beautiful hand carved pattern of shapes. This bench is truly remarkable, each carving being done painstakingly by hand but still achieving wonderful symmetry and beauty. Two of these panels in the back rest have small cracks in them which you can see in the pictures. Still a strong and sturdy piece, don't miss out on owning a unique hand carved bench like this. The seat height is 21.5" and the arm height is 31.5".
