Covered in intricate hand carvings, this carved walnut bench is a true work of art. Made in Italy around 1800, this bench has a flip up seat to allow for storage space underneath. The amazing carvings depict several characters often found in carvings of this period. There is a carved woman in the very center of the back who is flanked by two carved griffons. The arms are carved lions heads and there is another lions head carved in the middle of the bottom. All of these carvings are surrounded by a multitude of floral decorations and it all comes together perfectly to make a definite eye catching piece. This bench is very sturdy and structurally sound. There are a number of age splits that you will see in the photos and minor wear you would expect from a piece of this age. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon in solid wood pieces and is cosmetic only. The walnut has developed a most beautiful patina over the years and could be the center piece in any number of rooms.
