This carved oak bookcase is a beautiful continental European cabinet that was made around 1890 probably in Holland. The oak is a beautiful dark brown color that will continue to develop its patina and grow more beautiful as time passes. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of this bookcase are the beautifully turned barley twist columns that run up either side. There is a plethora of other carved decorations including the beautifully carved bottom doors that show fish and fowl, a common motif for this era. The top section has two locking glass doors. Inside are three shelves, two of which are adjustable via an alligator bracket system. The bottom cabinet has one shelf and also locks. The two drawers are made with hand cut dovetails and have carved lion head handles. The large cornice is also carved and decorated. This bookcase is in two pieces for easier moving. Besides the normal minor wear you would expect in a piece of this age, there are minor small splits in the columns (see pictures) and minor repaired splits in the lower left door. These are quite minor and purely cosmetic, overall this bookcase is in very good condition and quite sturdy. The shelves in the top bookcase section are 10" deep.
