This beautiful solid quartersawn oak bureau (also known as a secretary) was hand-crafted in Georgian England around 1820 and recently restored by a third-generation cabinetmaker. Over the years, the wood has developed a lovely patina, which enriches the distinct quartersawn oak and mahogany grains and lustrous complexions. Because of how wonderfully the patina has set in (due to a fine selection of wood and a masterful hand-finishing process) and the extensive use of quartersawn oak and mahogany crossbanding, this bureau looks particularly exquisite, striking in its fullest form after over one hundred years of aging. This bureau, versatile in its classic design, also offers plenty of storage space, and would make a great work area for any place in the home or office. The interior features felt lining, though heavily worn, and each drawer features hand-cut dovetailed joints, which signify fine craftsmanship.
This Georgian period bureau has sustained a number of small stress marks and an ink stain on the top, although the excellent restoration has preserved most of the original beauty of this bureau, which is complemented by antique charm and aging. None of the locks function, despite there being a key; the key is used to open the fall, since it has no handle (which is normal). Each side has developed an age split, which is a purely cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect structural integrity and results, as the term indicates, from age. This fantastic Georgian quartersawn oak bureau remains in excellent structural condition and should continue to function for another two hundred years and more!
