Made around 1860 during the Victorian furniture making period in England, this mahogany secretaire bookcase is an impressive piece that will make a statement in any room. With its prominent arched glass doors and beautifully patina-ted mahogany wood, this bookcase is what every piece of Victorian furniture strives to be. It is simple with its clean lines, plinth base, and moulded cornice, but decorative with its hand carved columns, fluted sides, and paneled doors. Inside the bookcase the three shelves are adjustable by means of an alligator bracket system. There is a key for the secretaire drawer, but not one for the top or bottom cabinet doors. These doors do stay shut on their own. This bookcase is very sturdy and structurally sound, but does have a few cosmetic issues you would expect from a piece of this age. There are some veneer chips to the plinth base and on the left and right of the secretaire section. Also on the left and right of the secretaire section are small age splits. These splits are a naturally occurring phenomenon that happens in solid wood and do not affect the structural integrity of the piece. There is an old repair to the moulding on the center of the bottom doors and a small chip to the bottom of the right bookcase door. All of these cosmetic issues are old and touched up so that they add character to the piece rather than detract from it. The interior of the secretaire section features several small drawers and a leather inlay. The leather is quite worn but still serviceable. The cabinet at the bottom has two drawers on the right and the rest of the space is open for storage. Overall this beautiful bookcase is an impressive antique that would make a wonderful addition to any home or office. This bookcase does break down into two pieces (top and bottom) for easier transporting.
