This gorgeous antique solid oak bench was hand-crafted in the Netherlands around 1850. The wood displays a wonderful, pronounced grain and warm, lustrous complexion, both enriched by a lovely patina, which should continue to grow more beautiful with time. In places, the makers also used quartersawn oak, which is a particularly stunning variety of oak. The most striking aspect of this bench is the set of intricate carvings; a pattern of clovers marks the lower backrest and sides, while a galleon is displayed in the center, a typical feature in the fine antique furniture of the sea-loving Dutch. The shaped skirt and shaped feet also look quite elegant, while the shaped and design of this bench actually make it quite comfortable for a solid wood piece. Remarkably, there is no damage to speak of, beyond surface wear consistent with age and an age split on the side. Age splits are purely cosmetic phenomena that do not affect structural integrity and result, as the term indicates, from age only. A repair has also been made to the backrest, which can be seen in a picture below. All solid wood pieces eventually develop age splits, which are often considered aesthetically pleasing and true markers of great age. Whether used for actual sitting or as an exquisite addition to tasteful decor, this antique Dutch solid oak bench would be perfect for any situation, and should continue to endure for generations to come!
