This Victorian mahogany pedestal desk was hand-crafted in England around 1880 and recently imported to our antique furniture store here in Atlanta, GA. The mahogany, which has developed a lovely patina over the years, displays an incredibly rich complexion and grain. The burgundy leather writing surface, which is bordered by hand-worked gold tooling, complements the mahogany beautifully, as do the solid-brass swan neck drop pulls. Given that this desk was crafted in 1880 and how excellent the leather appears, the leather was probably replaced sometime shortly after the close of the Edwardian period.
As useful as it is beautiful, this Victorian mahogany pedestal desk contains a total of nine drawers, each of which features hand-cut dovetailed joints. Although the drawers contain locks that probably still function, this Victorian desk no longer retains its key. The shaped bracket feet remain as sturdy as ever, and there are no structural flaws, although this Victorian desk has sustained some surface wear consistent with age; mainly, that entails some minor stress marks all about the wood, but there are also some scratches in the leather and crackling in the veneer on the drawer fronts. This Victorian mahogany pedestal desk remains in great overall condition, particularly for a desk of its age (which is a rare sight in any case). Because of its remarkable condition, this Victorian desk would make a great desk for daily use or for decorative purposes, and it will certainly last another century and more, so taking this desk home with you would be a real investment!
